Out of Africa

Out of Africa

55" x 74.5"

After a little practice with painting on silk, I was able to paint what I thought were some pretty good looking animals. I wanted to incorporate them into a quilted wallhanging so I came up with the idea to make an African themed quilt. I created the trees by hand painting cotton fabrics and did a lot of trapunto work for the branches. I used decorative yarns for the leaves on the trees. The background was a commercial fabric that I pleated and sewn down getting the texture that I was after. To make it a little more interesting I hand painted the woman's face and upper body and appliqued it onto the quilt.

This quilted wallhanging was juried into the American Quilters Society quilt show in Paducah, Kentucky in April 2004. It was also shown at our local quilt show in July 2006 in Owensboro, Kentucky.
